- In 28 of the 51 disciplines ranked, US universities are first. Harvard University and MIT continue to be the top-performing schools, placing first in twelve disciplines.
- A British institution leads in fifteen topic tables, with the University of Oxford leading in six.
- ETH Zurich is the best university in continental Europe, with the top spot in three disciplines. Switzerland is also the world's third-best higher education sector, based on its proportion of top-10 rankings.
- In terms of the number of entries, Australia is the fourth most represented nation.
- China (Mainland) is ranked fifth in the world for the number of programmes (100), putting it in the top 50.
- The National Institution of Singapore is the finest university in the world for Petroleum Engineering. It is Asia's highest-performing university. In sixteen fields, NUS is ranked in the top ten.
- After decades of underfunding for research and PhD students, Japanese higher education is continuing to decline.
- Universidad de Chile is ranked 8th in the world in Engineering - Mineral & Mining, followed by UNAM (Mexico) at 13th in Modern Languages and Universidade de So Paulo (USP) at 15th in Dentistry in Latin America.
- The University of Cape Town is still Africa's most competitive university, ranking ninth in the world in Development Studies.
